Bachelors from Prague, perpetual cool

Two interviews with Melbourne’s Bachelors from Prague, 1989 & 1990. Henry Maas & Andrew Philipp are both up early (twice) to talk about The Energetic Cool and Great albums.

Despite my not really being able to describe their sound or genre accurately, Henry and Andrew are very patient with me. Even going so far as to give me a job offer.

All the important issues are covered, the size of their dressing room, why they don’t wear bright colours and is their manager Mario Macaroni a fictional character?

We even namecheck a few long gone venues like The Harbourside Brasserie and IDs.

Thankyou to Bachelors from Prague for all the very cool good times.

And they are back,so go see them! (and their dressing room)

Maynard goes New Romantic on Sunday

For one brief hour, just this once, I’ll be playing at the Electronique monthly New Wave afternoon this Sunday 3rd September with a New Romantic set sure to impress the shoulder pads off you all.

Duran Duran, ABC, Spandau Ballet, Lene Lovich and even Blue Rondo a la Turk will be played between 4-5pm after which I will possibly be asked to leave the building by management, leaving Mark Vick & Jade to Grey to continue the regular New Wave sounds of the afternoon through to 10pm.

That’s at Harpoon Harrys 4-5pm Sunday.

The Dynamic Hepnotics are back (one show only)

The Dynamic Hepnotics cut a rug across Australia & New Zealand in the 7 years they played across your wide brown land. And they are returning for 3 shows only. 1 in Sydney, 2 in Melbourne.

These days they are busy people with busy music careers, so I put my foot in the door of the lead singer and all round playboy, Continental Robert Susz, at his swanky Kings Cross apartment. An apartment that Adam West himself would be jealous of.

Join Continental Robert and myself in the Suszland music room for wine, music, gossip and Undercover Elephant.

If you don’t go to their upcoming shows you truely are a burden to society.

Get up offa that thing!

Totally 80s Tour, Part 3 – Limahl

Final part of the backstage antics during the Totally 80s tour across Australia last winter. Limahl has a drink and tells us what it was like working with Georgio Moroder to produce the song Never Ending Story.

In fact let’s all have a few drinks and meet everyone backstage.

In this show you will hear from:

Paul Lekarkis (just back from shopping)
Dave Schulz, Chris Olivias, Terri Nunn of Berlin (they have sock envy)
Ivan Doroschuk (very elusive)
Dave Sterry Real Life (he knows where the bodies are buried)
Johnno Smallman (artist liaison, I’ll let him explain it)
Katrina of The Waves (poodle and pub talk)
Martika fans from Portland in Victoria
Paul Gray (our musical director and Mr Waa Waa Nee)
Simon Shapiro (bass player and Mr 1927)

Slight mix up backstage by Maynard, holding Kamahl album, with Limahl on Totally 80s tour.

Howard Jones Australian tour 2016

Howard Jones is touring Australia with Kim Wilde in a tour that starts today. So let’s have a chat with Howard about his early years manufacturing cling wrap all the way through to his latest release Engage. Find out what Mr Jones has in his lounge room and what radio station he listens too.

Here is my interview with his tour buddy Kim Wilde

All you need to know about where to see Howard Jones & Kim Wilde.

Ratcat celebrate 30 years

Ratcat celebrated 30 years as a band with Toys Went Berserk & Spod at The Factory in Sydney on 14th October. Maynard was on hand as DJ/MC and the night went a bit nuts. Hear from Simon Day, Nic Dalton, Andy Jarvis, Coo Bennett and a lot of over excited fans.

Go onstage, upstage and backstage with me. Your name is on the door.

My last interview with James Freud

I was lucky to interview James Freud a number of times in the 80s and 90s, this tape I found recently was the last radio interview I did with him after the release of his Step Into The Heat album in 1990. Mushroom had spent a record amount on the album, something that James hadn’t intended as you will hear.

I asked him to pick any track off the album to play, something I always like to do as often singles aren’t chosen by the artist.

James chose Lets Get It On from the album, perhaps because it was the closest track on the album with the sound he originally intended for the entire album.

He mentions his son Harrison, then 2 and an incident with Madonna that we never did find out about.

This was not a great time for James, but his natural charm and sense of humour shines through as always. He is missed on the Australian music scene to this day.

On a technical note, the interview was for my Triple J breakfast show so wasn’t as long as it could have been, the open reel tape suffers from overprinting towards the end, hence the echo effect. Original production by Chris Norris.

Bunga Bunga 31 Tim Ferguson & Maynard

Tim Ferguson is off to the Edinburgh Festival with the Doug Anthony All Stars, Maynard has just returned from an Australian wide tour with lots of 80s stars. So they have a lot to talk about.

They answer your Crankmail and mention Vengaboys and Limahl.

This show Tim has some handy hints on how to start a fight while flying and how to deal with with those pesky English hecklers.

By the end of Bunga Bunga 31 we will have lived up to our usual Bunga Bunga guarantee that you will be no wiser, but you may have learned something.

Kim Wilde returns for Australian tour 2016

The beautiful and talented Kim Wilde returns to tour Australia in November 2016 with the always polite Howard Jones.

Kim Wilde speaks to us from her lounge room today about her music, her garden and her hair.

I remind Kim of the last time we met, which naturally she has no recollection of, but she still has an ironic joy of certain 80s bands as you will hear.

She takes some of your questions and gets ready for your selfie sticks.

Warning, interview contains unconventional use of peanut butter.
